With five years to go until 2012, Parents for Children is delighted to announce a series of running events around the outstanding Lee Valley Park. The inaugural five2go Lee Valley Trail Marathon will take place on Saturday 10 November 2007, along with an exciting 5k Fun Run on Hackney Marsh East, overlooking the future Olympic site, and a 1k Fun Run, especially for children.

This is a picture of the riverside path at St Margarets, Hertfordshire, near to the start of the Five2Go trail marathon. The trail marathon will take a point-to-point course alongside the stunning waterways of the River Lee, starting at St Margarets in Hertfordshire and finishing at Hackney Marsh. This is a truly unique marathon along an almost exclusively traffic free route.

This is a picture of Edwina Brocklesby, Parents for Children's Director, running beside Dobbs Weir.Alongside the natural beauty of the Lee Valley you will be able to take in the progress of some of the future 2012 Olympic sites including the White Water Canoe Slalom course at Broxbourne and the future Olympic Park, just across Homerton Road at the finish in Hackney.

The timing of these events has also been specifically chosen to tie in with BBC’s Children in Need appeal the following week. Funds raised in the form of sponsorship will be split between Parents for Children and BBC’s Children in Need. This is a picture of swans and cygnets on the Lee.This joint approach will ensure that underprivileged children all over the country benefit from our fundraising.

Families and friends are invited to join in the support on the day at Hackney Marsh where there will be a real festival feel to the day. The South East Kiting Association will be on hand to do some kiting demonstrations, along with other family friendly activities.

Five2go is an exciting series of running events in and around the Lee Valley Park. Consisting of a trail marathon, 5k and 1k running events which all end overlooking the future 2012 Olympic site, this is a special event in the running calendar.

BUT the event cannot take place without people willing to volunteer as marshals. We need around 60 people to come and help marshall (hand out water/food/direct participants etc). Could you help, or do you know someone else that can help?

Why be a marshal?

  • Play a key part in a major fundraising event, supporting Parents for Children and BBC's Children in Need
  • A great way to see this lovely and often overlooked part of London and Hertfordshire
  • Food and travel expenses provided
  • No previous experience needed and lots of guidance given

For further information about volunteering at Parents for Children please click here or if you are interested in becoming a marshal or want to find out more, please email [email protected]
