Work with birth families

During our experience of finding families for children for over 30 years, we have developed an extensive range of services for the facilitation of contact with birth families. As with many of our services, we can provide a full package of services or a selection, as appropriate.

At any stage during a placement we can offer

  • A contact point or helpline
  • Counselling
  • Explanation of current legislation and rights
  • Support groups for birth parents (provided there is sufficient demand)

At the time a child is adopted we can

  • Explain the adoption process to the birth parents and help the relinquishing parents or those whose children who have been removed
  • Provide information about organisations who can offer advice and useful services
  • Clarify the roles of the adoptive parents, the local authority or authorities, the various professionals involved in the process, and Parents for Children’s staff
  • Support the birth parents to optimise their role in the future life of their children
  • Support parents to put their views to the adoption panel
  • Support parents in arranging and agreeing contact arrangements

Post placement we can

  • Provide letter box contact
  • Provide non-identifying information, where we hold records
  • Record the wishes of parents to be contacted
  • Liaise with and support parents at times of distress
  • Help with searching and facilitating reunions
  • Offer post-reunion support

Parents for Children guarantees that there will be no waiting list for our services for birth families. We are fully compliant with data protection legislation and operate a full complaints procedure.
