Adoption day – the legal stuff

After the child moves into your home, there will be regular reviews with your social worker to discuss how things are going and to decide when is the right time to adopt the child. After this, you apply to the Court and receive an application form, which your Parents for Children social worker will help you to complete. Unless the application is complex, you should not need legal representation.

The legal process may take several months, but eventually you'll be given a date for the adoption hearing. After the hearing, the child is, in law, your child and has the same legal relationship to you as if he or she had been born to you. You now have full parental responsibility for the child.
